Amtrak (Mbi Railroad Color History)

This pictorial history is only the second of its kind to trace the 30-plus-year history of Amtrak, beginning with a look at the rise and fall of privately run passenger train service followed by a look at Amtrak’s infant stage from 1971 through 1976. Also examined is the period from 1976 to 1991, when Amtrak finally established an image, buying new equipment and refurbished old and grew its ridership despite a severely limited budget. Germany’s famously extensive and efficient rail system is given a fine showcase here. On the so-called “Fairy Tale Road,” the train stops at picturesque old haunts of those famous fairy-tale collectors the Brothers Grimm: towns such as Bremen (of the Bremen Town Musicians) and Hamelin (of the Pied Piper). The outlook for summer and fall 2009 resorts, cruise and rail travel

Category: High speed rail — Tags: , , , , , , , – admin @ 9:54 pm

Overall: Great travels deals are available

Given that there was a significant reduction in travel over the last twelve months; leisure travel operators are slashing prices to attract customers.  Bundled travel deals are still the best because they offer additional discounted airfare and/or hotel stays. Expect an increasing number of hotels, rental car companies and tour operators to offer discounts on their base rates.  A few week ago, I asked several vendors at a travel fair about their current rates, most indicated that they had rolled back prices to 2006/2007 rates.  This should be welcomed news for budget travelers who can find a cornucopia of deals at this time.

Also; consumers can find good travel deals for air travel. While rates have not declined to the Fall 2001 bonanza levels, if you book well in advance or on special days (savvy travel agents know about special days), you can get a really good price. In fact, London, Paris and Dublin have become more affordable, with British Airways and Air France offering great deals. Toronto and Montreal Canadian are excellent options for week-end getaways close to home.

All Inclusive Resorts: Mexico on Sale

Mexico is on sale for the remainder of this year.  In order to compete with the significant reduced prices of the resorts in Cancun, Cozumel and Iztapa, Sandals and SuperClubs are offering 30-65% off specials.  Not to be outdone, GoGo Worldwide Vacations is offering special pricing on their Worldwide Collection which includes China, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan & South Korea to its existing destinations: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Cook Island, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore and Bali. Collette Vacations is offering free air travel to Europe, China or the Canadian Rockies. Apple Vacations is offering saving up to 70% on fall deals. It is important to note that consumer interested in GoGo Worldwide Vacations and Apple Vacations should contact a travel agent.

Cruises: Always a great deal

Cruising is, and will remain the best travel deal for the remainder of the year. Whether you are a budget, premium or luxury traveler, there is a cruise for you at an affordable price. Pick the destination you have always dreamed about: Alaska, the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, or South America – is within your grasp. As always, flexibility about your desired itinerary, and dates, will help you save. Cruises are available at a rate of $65 per person per day or less. So get out there! You deserve a cruise. It’s good for you, it’s affordable and you’ve earned it.

Beware Of Hidden Cost When Getting Discount Airfare To Europe

Category: train travel — Tags: , , , , , , , – admin @ 9:46 pm

If you are planning a vacation in Europe, it goes without saying that you want to find the best value fare possible. You can find out about discount airfare to Europe online and save yourself a lot of money.

It is important to realize that there are often hidden costs associated with discounted fares and the first price to appear on the screen is not necessarily the full price. You will have to pay tax on your flights and some online travel agents automatically include the price of an airline meal to your ticket. Another added cost can be insurance but this is optional or you might have your own policy. You need to view a breakdown of the cost of your ticket before you book to see what hidden extras have been added on.

Europe is quite compact and it might be cheaper to get a flight to an airport near where you want to go and then finish the trip by train or bus. When checking out discount airfare to Europe, check the airports within 100 miles or so of your planned vacation spot and you might get a real bargain. A train or bus journey can be fun too. If the arrival airport is in a different country, you might need to check if you will need another visa for entry. Discount airfare to Europe often means flying to small, provincial towns so you need to decide if it is more important to save money or whether you are willing to pay more and avoid the transfer at the other end. The most important thing to think about if considering this is the price of the train or bus the other end. It might add up to the same price as a non-discounted flight. Train and bus prices in Europe vary enormously depending on the country in question.

Discount airfare to Europe usually means you will be traveling on a no-frills airline, so don’t expect an in-flight movie or a meal and drinks unless you pay (usually a lot) for them. If your flight is only a couple of hours, you won’t need to eat and drink on board anyway or you can take a small snack.

When you book discount airfare to Europe, remember too that quoted fares might only apply to Apex travelers or European residents. You need to check all the small print and make sure you know exactly what the price of your ticket is going to be. Try to book your discount airfare to Europe well in advance of your departure date because prices tend to be lower. Sometimes you can get a last minute bargain but it is not really worth trying this because you might find that nothing is available at all.

Whether you want to experience the romance of Paris, the interesting history of Munich or see the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, you should be able to find a great choice of discount airfare to Europe online. Just make sure you check for hidden extras and compare a number of prices and options so you get the best flight for you.

For more information, check out Discount Airfare to Europe site. Find Discount Airfare at DiscountAirfareHotline.com

Train Travel Offers Unique Vacation

Category: train travel — Tags: , , , , – admin @ 9:37 pm

Trains offer a scenic view of the country and can be an inexpensive alternative to flying.  Airline tickets may be going down, but even the discount airfare does not compete with the beauty and majesty of the train.

Tips for Successful Train Travel

  • Be on early for your train – traveling by rail is not different than choosing a cheap flight when it comes to being on time.  It will be easier to get on board but you still want to be sure that you are not running to catch your train.
  • Limit the amount of luggage – although some trains do offer baggage check it is easier to only bring along what you can comfortably carry.  Most trains limit the number of carry on baggage to only to pieces per person (purses, diaper bags, strollers and other similar items are not included in the count).
  • Do your research – find out what attractions or views you will be passing during your rail adventure.  Choose a seat that will provide the best view for the trip.
  • Start short – go on a scenic ride or other short trip to get accustomed to train travel.  It is better to find out before jumping into to a cross country trip.
  • Make the train ride the vacation – Choose a pass that will allow you to get off and visit some of the stops for a day or two before reboarding to the next destination. You will get to see more of the country for less expense.

Train travel can be a unique alternative to cheap flights and discount airline tickets.  Traveling by rail can give you the option of stopping at different locations along the way.  It also provides a better view of the country where you are traveling.

Pre-Budget Report: Rail Transport Set For Boost

Category: High speed rail — Tags: , , , , – admin @ 9:50 pm

Chancellor Alistair Darling’s Pre-Budget Report (PBR) caused shockwaves throughout UK PLC and has been heralded as one of the most extraordinary packages of measures presented by a Chancellor in a long time. It seems that the government really does understand just how serious things are outside the hallowed halls of Parliament and has reacted accordingly, giving the country an economic shot in the arm with a plethora of measures, all designed to pull the country out of recession as quickly as possible.

The PBR announced a massive investment in the country’s infrastructure, with £3billion worth of proposals initially set for 2010-11 being brought forward to 2009. One of the main beneficiaries of this cascade of financial aid has been the rail industry, with the government committed to ploughing millions back into the rail system. This is good news for railway jobs and vacancies within the industry, as more rolling stock and more trains will obviously need more staff to maintain and operate them.

Network Rail published its interim financial and performance results recently, and it was revealed that punctuality was at its highest levels since records began in 1992. The improvements are the result of continued investment in the infrastructure of Network Rail’s system, meaning a better service for both passengers and freight operators. The report revealed that £2,200million had been invested in the British rail network over a six month period, amounting to a 25% increase in capital expenditure compared to the same period in the previous year. In the face of what seems to be economic meltdown generally, that’s a massive investment in an industry many thought was dead on its feet. It seems that the rail network has turned a corner.

The PBR also boosted this rosy picture by bringing forward an increase in rolling stock originally destined to go into production in 2014. The Department of Transport had been expecting to pay for 1,300 new carriages, but with the announcements in the PBR it now looks like plans for at least 200 new trains will be fast-tracked. As well as easing passenger congestion and updating an ageing rolling stock, this decision to inject cash into the rail system will boost one of the country’s remaining heavy industries, giving a much needed lift to skilled manufacturing and supplier’s jobs. Rail vacancies will increase as a consequence of this investment, giving those seeking rail jobs more opportunity to join an industry that is set to move forward in the next few years.

Campaigners are also hoping that this shift in government policy – from mothballing many major projects just a year ago to reviving them as a means to boost the economy – will also mean that plans such as the new north-south high speed line will burst back into life, again boosting jobs within the rail industry. The Chancellor has pledged to invest £20billion into the UK economy, with at least £3billion of that earmarked for key infrastructure projects. The Crossrail project will cost the government £16billion but yield up a long-term return of £66billion, adding fuel to the old adage that to make money, you have to spend money.

This financial manoeuvring is good news for rail jobs, as skilled people will be needed throughout the industry to take part in one of the biggest overhauls of the rail network in years. Despite the media stories of a country in meltdown, behind the scenes there is a great deal to be positive about, including better opportunities for foundation industries and infrastructures, a greater development of an overall UK PLC strategy and long-term solutions rather than short-term quick fixes. All of which will lead to a more stable job market for those looking for rail vacancies and careers within the rail industry.

Visiting Europe? Keep These 6 Tips in Mind!

Category: train travel — Tags: , , , , , – admin @ 9:50 pm

Travelling to Europe can be a wonderful and life-changing experience, but many people don’t enjoy it the way they could and should because of the little annoyances that pop up during the trip.

Here are a few tips to ensure you can make the most of your travel through Europe:

1. Instead of taking a taxi to your hotel it might be a lot better to share an airport shuttle with a few other travellers. Airport taxis are usually more expensive and some unscrupulous drivers will take side routes or even mess with the meter just to get more money out of your pocket.

With an airport shuttle you save money and you don’t have to worry about directions or finding the hotel; plus, you can get picked up again at the end of your stay and dropped off at the airport.

2. Take your time when travelling! Some people go on vacation doing a speed tour of every city and location they can think of, and this really is not the way to travel anywhere. Travelling this way will only exhaust you and you won’t get to enjoy each city the way you should.

Remember this: it’s good to plan ahead but don’t stick to it if you feel that you haven’t spent enough time somewhere. It’s better to go back another time and pick up where you left off than to go home tired and disappointed with the experience.

3. Are you sure you have enough time to visit all the places you want? Make sure that you reserve 2 or 3 days for each location and half a day or a full day for travelling from one place to another.

Given this reasoning for a 10 day trip you should plan to visit 3 or 4 places at the most, and a 15 day trip would be suitable for 6 destinations.

It is also helpful if you plan ahead for a route that will take you less time to travel from destination to destination – saving on travel time will give you more time to do other things.

4. Rent a car or go by train? Both options have pros and cons, so it’s worth thinking which is suitable for you.

Renting a car can give you freedom that a train can’t: for example in France there are a lot of vineyards that offer free wine tasting or dairy farms with free cheese tastings. Just pop out of the car and enjoy!

On the other hand, trains are best when you are short on time and money – unlike the United States, train fares are cheaper here and the distances are not that great. Also, if you stick to major cities you’ll most likely get there faster than in a car. If you plan on visiting smaller towns or even villages chances are that a train runs through there, so going by rail is always a good choice!

5. Gas Prices – if renting a car you should also be aware of the higher gas prices in Europe. While the average price per gallon in the United States is hovering around $2.50 in Europe you won’t find it cheaper than $4 per gallon, and that’s at best. Some European countries have it at around $7 per gallon.

That train ride sounds better and better, huh?

6. Bring batteries and power adapters – if you’re from Asia or the United States be sure to bring batteries and power adapters for every electronic device that you have with you.

Although you can find them in Europe too, they are cheaper in your country and you wouldn’t want your camcorder dying on you when you really need it!

Keep these tips in mind and your trip to Europe will be the best one in your life!
